The term «Big Data» is often understood as the act of collecting and processing large amounts of data. In healthcare and medicine, Big Data is related to subjects like data-driven health research and the electronical patient record. The SAMS addresses Big Data-related themes especially within the framework of the Swiss Personalized Health Network (SPHN).
Data-driven health research has the potential to change the healthcare system by increasing its quality, efficiency, and adaptability. The Swiss Personalized Health Network (SPHN) aims at laying the foundations that will enable Swiss-wide research with large amounts of data in a responsible, ethical, and lawful manner.
Patient, doctor, Big Data
The effects of Big Data on the healthcare system exceed personalized health. In 2018, the SAMS and the Swiss Science Council dedicated a common workshop to the changes induced by Big Data regarding the role of physicians, patients, and our understanding of health and disease.
White Paper
In 2014, the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences conducted an interdisciplinary workshop on «Big Data in Healthcare». Experts summarized the results of the workshop in a white paper published in the «Swiss Academies Communications» series.
Events
The SAMW has organized several events on Big Data and personalized medicine, both independently and in collaboration with national and international partners. Some of these events have resulted in a publication. The meeting documents are available for download.
