The Swiss federal authorities launched in 2017 the national funding initiative Swiss Personalized Network (SPHN). SPHN’s mission is to create infrastructure for connecting medical data from partner institutions and to ensure the interoperability of clinical patient data for research purposes.

Since its creation SPHN has established the framework that enables hospitals to provide treatment data for research. The network ensures a legally, ethically, and technically sound framework for data exchange, thereby promoting health data research based on the FAIR principles; ensuring that data is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.

In the 2025–2028 federal funding period SPHN will continue to ensure the coordination, interoperability, and secure use of health data. This includes a platform for searching and analyzing standardized data, the secure BioMedIT infrastructure, a national repository for genetic data, and the provision of hospital data through the National Data Stream consortia (NDS).

The SAMS is responsible for the mandate of SPHN’s Data Coordination Center (DCC) and will continue its successful collaboration with the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics.

On the SPHN website you will find comprehensive information on the goals, funding, network partners, etc. of the initiative.

The SPHN Data Coordination Center (SPHN-DCC): Consolidating the SPHN infrastructures beyond 2024

One year before the official ending of the initiative, SPHN has published a comprehensive report outlining strategies for ensuring the sustainable continuation of the SPHN data infrastructures beyond 2024. The report further formulates the expectations and needs of the Swiss research community concerning the activities of the SPHN-DCC, promoting the efficient and responsible secondary use of health data. The report is written in English with a summary in German and French. Printed copies can be ordered free of charge (format: A4).
